MORE ABOUT THE PATHWAYS FOR MEDICATION SAFETY® TOOLS
Because not every hospital has the same needs, each of the Pathways for Medication Safety® tools is presented in a modular format. This way, each organization can quickly identify and use materials would be most relevant to their situation.

Leading a Strategic Planning Effort. This tool is designed to help hospital leadership and their staff implement an effective medication safety strategic plan at their hospital. The tool includes a model strategic plan, directions for using the model plan to create an organization-specific strategic plan for medication safety, and other materials such as job descriptions, surveys, guidelines, and checklists that can be useful in designing and implementing a strategic plan.

Looking Collectively at Risk. This tool provides strategies for assessing risk in an organization in order to identify areas where process improvement is needed to increase medication safety. The tool addresses the needs and perspectives of five distinct hospital audiences: administrators/managers, physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and risk managers.

Assessing Bedside Bar-Coding Readiness. This tool will help hospitals better understand what is required to apply this emerging technology in health care and to prepare for implementation of a bedside bar-coded drug administration system. The materials will help organizations understand the issues related to bar coding in health care, assess their readiness, and move towards an effective implementation.

Through a generous grant from The Commonwealth Fund and the contribution of materials from a variety of organizations, all electronic versions of the materials in the Pathways for Medication Safety® tools are available free of charge on this site.
